Researching Preserving the World's Great Cities involved visits to 22 cities (18 of which are described in the book). The travel phase extended across 18 months. My wife and I spent about two weeks in each place where we visited significant landmarks and historic neighborhoods; gathered several hundred pounds of written materials; met with assorted historians, architects, planners, preservationists, and officials; and took about 6,000 color slides.
